Learn to understand, create, care and contribute.
A proposed learning framework, not an accredited curriculum. K–12 labels are used for convenience; adapt to local standards, language, readiness and learner needs. The principles express values, not scientific measurements.
Several routes. Shared foundations.
Academic study, skilled work and creative practice can all contribute. Choose a route using interests, prerequisites, access and the kind of work you want to do. Durations, credits, admission and professional requirements vary by institution and country.
Undergraduate progression
A four-stage planning model, often spread across four years. Three-year degrees and longer professional programmes organise these stages differently.
Foundation stage · often undergraduate year 1
Study: Writing and rhetoric; quantitative reasoning and statistics; disciplinary foundations; computing literacy; history and ethics; a sustained arts or language elective.
Practise: Complete a reproducible small inquiry and a creative or practical project. Meet advisers, identify gaps and compare academic and vocational routes.
Demonstrate: Annotated bibliography, problem set portfolio, source-checked report and a revised study plan.
Methods stage · often undergraduate year 2
Study: Major prerequisites, research or studio methods, data analysis, systems thinking, economics of the field and professional communication.
Practise: Join a supervised lab, studio, workshop or community partnership. Learn relevant consent, safety, privacy and research-integrity procedures.
Demonstrate: Methodological critique, pilot study or prototype, teamwork review and a portfolio of independent contributions.
Depth stage · often undergraduate year 3
Study: Advanced electives in a coherent specialisation; an adjacent discipline; evaluation methods; ethics and public policy relevant to the field.
Practise: Undertake a supervised placement or equivalent project. Compare the proposed solution with alternatives and gather permitted feedback.
Demonstrate: A substantial project, documented analysis, critique response and a cost or feasibility assessment.
Synthesis stage · often undergraduate year 4
Study: Integrative seminars, capstone or thesis preparation, professional practice and a transition-focused elective.
Practise: Deliver a capstone, thesis, exhibition or tested service. Present to disciplinary and non-specialist audiences and document a handover.
Demonstrate: Defended portfolio or thesis, reproducible materials where appropriate, limitations, credits and a continuing education plan.
Six pathways for deeper study
Science, engineering & planetary systems
Preparation: Strong algebra and scientific writing; precalculus before calculus, and relevant laboratory science. Use a foundation year when needed.
Foundation
Calculus and linear algebra as appropriate; physics, chemistry or biology; programming; engineering drawing or field methods.
Methods
Differential equations or statistics; experimental design; measurement; materials, energy or ecosystem analysis; uncertainty and reproducibility.
Specialisation
Choose energy systems, water, climate, agriculture, robotics, space or another defined field. Study controls, modelling or field techniques with the relevant prerequisites.
Synthesis
Integrate technical performance, cost, environmental impacts, maintainability and community requirements.
Example capstone
Design and test a low-resource monitoring or efficiency project using safe equipment or simulation; publish methods, uncertainty and lifecycle assumptions.
Advanced study
Master’s: advanced modelling and a supervised thesis or applied design project. Doctoral route: identify a specific gap, review prior work, validate methods and produce an original, defensible contribution. Research training does not automatically confer professional licensure.

Specialisation
Choose public health, biomedical research, nutrition science, psychology or preparation for a regulated clinical programme; use supervised training only.
Synthesis
Evaluate an intervention through study quality, feasibility, access, possible harms and community needs.
Example capstone
Critically appraise a published health claim or analyse an approved public dataset; propose a nonclinical educational resource with supervisor review.
Advanced study
Master’s: methods and a supervised research or public-health project. Professional practice requires jurisdiction-specific accredited training, supervised experience and authorisation. Doctoral research prepares for original inquiry; it is not a substitute for clinical qualifications.

Architecture, cities & skilled construction
Preparation: Geometry, algebra, communication and a visual or practical portfolio; entry and professional requirements depend on the programme.
Foundation
Drawing, spatial thinking, architectural history, materials, building science, surveying concepts and accessible design.
Methods
Structures, environmental systems, digital modelling, construction methods, urban history and design research.
Specialisation
Choose adaptive reuse, affordable housing, landscape, low-energy buildings, urban planning or a construction craft. Study costs, procurement and local codes with qualified guidance.
Synthesis
Combine user requirements, cultural context, safety, accessibility, carbon, cost and maintenance in a defensible design.
Example capstone
Create an adaptive-reuse or community-space proposal with drawings, a model, material comparisons and user feedback. Label it as a student concept, not construction-ready documentation.
Advanced study
Advanced study may include professional architecture, planning, conservation or building-performance programmes. Apprenticeship routes develop installation, repair and construction competence. Professional titles, degrees and licensure vary locally; no single four-year plan covers every route.

Arts, literature, heritage & philosophy
Preparation: Sustained reading or creative practice, curiosity about history and a portfolio where required; strengthen languages relevant to the field.
Foundation
Close reading, art or music history, creative studio, philosophy, language study and methods of interpretation.
Methods
Archive research, source criticism, composition or performance, aesthetics, oral history and permission-aware documentation.
Specialisation
Choose literature, music, visual arts, film, theatre, craft, conservation, philosophy or the academic study of religion. Compare traditions without claiming a hierarchy of cultures.
Synthesis
Create substantial original work or a research argument, explain influences and engage critically with multiple interpretations.
Example capstone
Produce an exhibition, performance, translation commentary, community archive or philosophical essay with permissions, attribution and an explanation of editorial choices.
Advanced study
Master’s or MFA: advanced studio practice, research methods and a substantial thesis or creative project. Doctoral route: an original scholarly or practice-based contribution supported by disciplinary methods. Religious studies examines traditions; adherence to a belief is not an assessment criterion.

Vocational study & apprenticeships
Explore and prepare
Compare accredited local programmes, entry requirements, costs, accessibility, paid apprenticeship options and completion outcomes. Build literacy, applied mathematics, digital skills and the relevant safety foundations.
Learn under supervision
Combine classroom or workshop theory with supervised practice in a chosen field: construction, electrical systems, manufacturing, agriculture, care, culinary arts, craft or digital operations. Follow the provider’s competency and safety requirements.
Demonstrate competence
Build a work portfolio with observed practical assessments, quality checks, fault diagnosis, communication and documented feedback. Seek the recognised credential or licence required locally; this website awards neither.
Advance or bridge
Develop deeper craft expertise, supervision, estimating, enterprise or design skills. Explore transfer agreements or bridging courses into higher education where available; credit transfer must be confirmed by the receiving institution.
Postgraduate study & lifelong learning
Master’s or advanced professional study
Explore details
Enter with the relevant degree, qualification or accepted equivalent and identified prerequisite strengths. Sequence advanced seminars and methods first, then a scoped thesis, studio or applied project. Evaluate evidence quality, feasibility and contribution; duration and award requirements are institution-specific.
Doctoral research
Explore details
With a qualified supervisory team, identify a narrow question, map prior work, develop methods, obtain required approvals before data collection, complete original work and defend it. Publish or share only with appropriate rights and permissions. Null findings and documented limitations are legitimate outcomes; a doctorate is not necessary for every impactful career.
Lifelong study
Explore details
Use a recurring cycle: identify a real skill gap, choose one focused resource, practise on a bounded task, obtain external feedback, demonstrate competence and revise the next goal. Maintain an evidence portfolio and revisit ethics, accessibility and the changing limits of your tools.
